Kindergarten

I am volunteering at Scera Park Elementry School in Orem, UT.  I am working with Denae Adams and her am kindergarten class.  I will be volunteering every Friday from 9:30 am to 11:30 am.

Today was my first day with my class.  I started off by doing end of week reading assignments with some of the children.  They practice sight words, letter sounds, phonetic words and then they read a small story with dialogue. There are questions at the end they answer.  This is the paper they take home and read over the weekend with parents.  Before passing back the reading homework, we logged all the results in a book. the words and sounds each child struggled with or didn't know.  The children read a story about Martin Luther King today and learned about him. They colored a picture of him and they had a little book to color with facts about him. Instead of having recess, due to the air quality and temperatures, one of the the mothers in the class has been coming in and doing yoga with the class as a substitute recess.

The children had 'centers' today while we were testing them on reading.  Each center had different teaching methods. Some students were playing games on the computers. Other children were reading, some colored and others worked together to do an exercise.  There was a lot of moving around to different exercises. They would listen to a story and then do an activity. Read something and then sound out letters.  I would imagine that you would have to switch things up a lot more with younger children.

I loved it. I can't wait for next week.

EdEl 1010

This is my new blog for Spring 2013. And a test to make sure it's set up right.
